Bloom filters are one of the really ingenious and simple building blocks for randomized data structures. A great summary is the paper by Broder and Mitzenmacher. In this post I will briefly review its key ideas since it forms the basis of the Count-Min sketch of Cormode and Muthukrishnan, it…
It has been a few months since the Handsome Wang gang has started collecting the English names of our Chinese friends and collegues. We have amassed quite a list so we thought it would be appropriate to share it in its entirety. Here you go:

Closing.
Finally closed on my new place in PA just over two weeks ago.
Finally a place I feel familiar with, comfortable — or will hopefully soon.
Before this, I’d honestly say that “home” — meaning the place where I felt most familiar and at peace had been Seat 15A on the upper deck of a United 747 hurtling across the Pacific. A symbol of my Ryan Bingham-ish life — with heart ambiguously vacillating between Asia and America… a life now in the past (somewhat) and one hopefully soon to be anchored down at least somewhat.
Looking to deepen relationships and practice hospitality, and have some fun in the process. ;)
Life 2.0
I was off the grid for NYE sharing hopes and vision with good friends old and new. Encouraged and looking forward to conquering several new frontiers in 2011. ;) Happy new year to all.
So here I am blogging once again for the first time since I returned from China. People often ask me why I left Shanghai. The obvious answer is the pursuit of professional opportunities that being in the Valley afforded me, and I emphasize that it wasn’t because I was tired of China in the least.
And yet, there’s something to be said about unwinding, decompressing and refocusing.
I liken it to half time. You know the rules of the game and you can study it to the hilt before you go out on the field, but there’s nothing like playing it to make you acutely aware of both your strengths — and weaknesses.
I consider my time in the Silicon Valley as half time — armed with greater self awareness that comes only from experience, you know what you’re looking for in terms of being coached for the game ahead… knowing your goals combined with the presence of friends and mentors makes for a thankful environment for me during this season of life.
Welcome to life 2.0. It’s going to be fun. ;)
